Venlo, 2025
After ten years living in Asia, I returned to my hometown of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The city felt familiar, but different. Fatbikes moved through newly designated cycling streets. Large underground bicycle parking facilities had been built beneath the centre. Nightclubs had disappeared while coffee bars multiplied. The central station has changed beyond recognition.
Among these changes, ordinary white geese caught my attention. The wild, white geese living in the historic city centre seemed more present than I remembered, moving through the canals and along the wharfs of the Oudegracht. They are visible throughout the day, sharing space with residents, tourists and business owners.
This project follows a fixed group of geese over the course of a year. Across the seasons, I document their daily routines: swimming toward the centre, resting along the Singel, nesting near Stadsschouwburg Utrecht. The series presents them as part of the urban landscape, highlighting how animals and people occupy the same public space in a changing European city.
